WEST HIGHLAND WHITE TERRIER CLUB OF ENGLAND CH   (Afternoon Show) 13/11/21

JUDGE DOUGLAS BERRY

It’s always an honour to judge a club show and I must thank the committee for all their efforts in running the show in these difficult times, particularly as they were hit by late call offs due to illness.  You never really know if an entry is a representative sample of a breed, however I will say I was struck by the wide variation in the size and widths of those present, with relatively few conforming to the happy medium that would provide them with the proportions and agility to perform their original function in the terrain of the breed’s place of origin.

PD (3,1)

1 Berry’s Ashgate Prince Charming, both here were just over the 9-month mark but quite different in type, he being shorter in leg and back.  Both moved well in profile carrying their tails on top and keeping level toplines.  Preferred his feet, short carrot tail and harder tighter coat. BPD.

2 Dale’s Lynnsto Mission Impossible, longer leggier type with pleasing head and expression.

JD (1,0)

1 Zhukov’s  Ashgate Affric, well made up to size male with big teeth and nice eyes well set in a good head.  Long tail, coat fairly soft and fine. The throwing of his nice straight front legs may well have been due to his looking up at his handler on the move.

YD (1,0)

1 Thomson’s Lynnsto Full Circle with Ashgate, with him being a very masculine strong headed dog it was more surprising in a way to find he was not happy with being gone over here. His lovely straight front was highlighted by his free and true movement all round, and he had the hardest and tightest of coats.

GD (3,2)

1 L Full Circle with Ashgate.

PGD (6,0)

1 Mitchell’s Guns of Glory De New Gryffindor, a lot to like in 1 & 2 with their good heads, straight fronts and hard coats.  He’s a lovely type with good angulation fore and aft, although he didn’t do his best on the go round for me.

2 Corri’s Inverglen Piper, of different proportions to above but as I said, a lot to like.

3 Eason’s Andjoliam Star is Born.

LD (4,3)

1 Bradbury’s Fourastay Fontayne, obviously this boy is much more mature than when I judged him as a baby but he still has the excellent eye, neat ears, hard coat and all the rest that impressed me then.  He has maybe grown on a bit more than I might have expected.

OD (4,2)

1 Jenkins, Owens, Crockett & Western’s Ch Duncabury Hear the Boss via Havasu, a lot of similarities in this pair, both with good substance and very masculine in attitude and headpieces with small eyes that helped to give a keen expression, even although their heads were not trimmed to my liking.  Both were in in good coat and moved well with toplines level and tails bang on, although he was perhaps the truer mover of the two.  CC & BOS.

2 Eason’s Andjoliam Silent Witness, particularly impressed by his well angulated muscular hindquarters.  RCC.

V (1,0)

1 Bacon’s Reifrandies Furzey at Cabon, 8-year-old bitch of a nice type with a dark eye and a well-made head which would have looked even better had she deigned to use her well set ears.  Her lovely forehand and overall construction have easily survived the test of time as has her sprightly movement. and her owner has kept her harsh coat well trimmed.  BV.

SBB (1,0)

1 Crozier’s Dalskairth Glamis Girl, the best, and the best trimmed, of the three bitches this exhibiter had under me although even she was carrying too much ear fringing for my liking.  However, that didn’t hide the fact that she has a very feminine head with nice eyes and ears that she used well in showing her expression.  She is also balanced, has a nice straight front, a decent white coat and moves freely carrying her tail well.

MPB (1,0)

1 Mitchell’s Newvoldemort Just Like Me at Frazandmitch, 6-months and as I would expect still a raw baby looking for head furnishings mainly but a lot to like about her, particularly her small eye, straight front, good coat, well-shaped tail and very good movement.

PB (4,0)

1 Noyce’s Vanilla Ice Cream, well-made and presented 9-month-old of lovely shape and balance with good feet, coat and tail.  Pleasing head with good eye and neat ears.  Moved and showed well.  BP.

2 Cumming’s Hillcloud Delphi, 10 months old and whilst a taller type she shared many of the attributes of 1.  However, her turned out feet did detract from her otherwise pleasing appearance.

3 Griffith’s Karamynd Snow Queen.

JB (1,0)

1 Fryer’s Hopecharm In For A Penny, lovely bitch to go over with a great head and expression, clean shoulders running into a good body and a well-set tail.  She was also presented in a lovely jacket and condition however her exuberance on the move did make it difficult for me to get the confirmation of my opinion of her construction that might have allowed me to give her a top award.

NB (4,2)

1 H Delphi. 2 D Glamis Girl.

GB (4,0)

1 Davison’s Smash Victoria’s Secret, lots to like about this correctly coated and well-presented bitch but a bit narrow through altogether for me.  Particularly pleasing in eyes, ears, head shape and expression with good feet on a lovely forehand.  Moved and showed well.

2 Szulzycka’s Newvoldemort Prada, this correctly sized and well-coated bitch performed a stunning transformation to a lovely free moving outline on the go from, frankly, resembling a sack of potatoes when stacked.  Neater ears would improve her head but her transformation did prove she had a good all-round construction that merited this placing in a very tight class.

PGB (5,2)

1 Stankiene & Stankus’ Newvoldemort Cookie at Vivolunar, rangier type but balanced with good angulation throughout and a decent head.  Coat harsh and white, moved well with tail on top and keeping her shape.

2 Bacon’s Cabon Sea Coral, nice feminine head with well-laid shoulder running nicely into level topline and well-set tail, which she carried well on the move.

3 Crozier’s Carshairn Sound of Islay.

LB (8,2)

1 Berry’s Let’s Play Vertragus with Ashgate, impressive young lady.  Larger than my overall winner but with otherwise much the same attributes.  Beautifully presented, moved well and with vigour.  RCC & RBIS.

2 West’s Tomlyndon Able Mabel, sturdy bitch with quality head and well angulated forehand, although I must say I wasn’t enamoured with the trimming of that here.  Firm level topline and bang on tail.  Another very animated mover.

3 Fryer’s Hopecharm Kiss From A Rose.

OB (7,4)

1 Storey’s Lizandycris Dior for Nossimp, so nice to find such a quality bitch in a size closer to the standard than most these days who also had the well-made head with the neat ears and keen expression that make a westie a westie.  Some may quibble that she didn’t carry her correctly set-on tail pointing to the heavens but that didn’’t used to be expected of bitches in particular, and given her excellent overall construction I was happy to award her CC & BIS.

2 Fryer’s Smash Sparkling Rose from Hopecharm, another with a lovely feminine head with the correct eye shape that matters so much.  Very good in forehand with good feet and the excellent presentation I’d expect of this kennel.  Moved well keeping her shape.

3 Dale’s Lynnsto Evelyn All

Brace (2,1)

1 Crozier’s D Glamis Girl & Dalskairth Braemar Belle.
